How did you name your pets? Do you even remember? I remember naming both my animals (we have a cat and a dog) because both have a story behind them.

We talked about getting a dog long before actually doing soo.. and I had always planned on naming it Hershey since we had been looking at chocolate labs. We had a neighbor up the street who we were friends with at the time, and had been chatting with them about getting our new family member. This must have been super inspirational too them seeing as, before we had the chance to bring our puppy home… they had already got one!

They brought her over to show us their newest addition and much to my surprise, they had gone and bought a chocolate lab, which they named Hershey. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That had to be my first thought. Just a few days prior we had told them that this was our exact plan..why did they need to copy us? I will never fully understand how some peoples brains work…

So now I had to come up with a whole new plan. We were still getting a chocolate lab, that wasn’t going to change but I knew I couldn’t get a chocolate lab, and name it Hershey too. We contemplated many names before we decided to name her Cocoa. In the end, her name is still chocolate related which was really the goal. She suits her name I think, and looking back now I can’t imagine her with any other name .

My cats name has a story behind it too. When I got her , they had named her Skylar, which I think is cute, however I just didn’t think it suited her. A day or two after I got her, we had the annual fair in town that everyone always goes too. I went and met up with a few friends, one of them who is….lets just say one of a kind. You never know what is going to come out of his mouth. I told them how I just got a new kitten and needed name suggestions. He mumbled a bunch of names at me, one of them being Cabella.

I kinda liked the sound of it, but I didn’t know what the word meant. I thought it would end up being a Spanish swear word or something, being the prankster he is. He assured me, it wasn’t and that it was a hunting/fishing store and apparel line. Still I was skeptical, so we made a deal. If I google it and he was right, I had to name my kitten Cabella..if he was wrong, he would help me pick a different name. Well, I googled it & he was right. I lost my bet, and was going to name my kitten Cabella. I actually really liked the name, and thought it was fitting for my little hunter cat.

I think names are so much more interesting when you know the history of the word, or when there is a story that goes along with it. People and pets all have some kind of back history to their name. Whats yours? Maybe ill look more into the meaning of my own name. Why did my parents choose what they did? What is the meaning of my name? What is the origin of my name? Research about your own name & tell me about it in the comments below!
